  • The Leftovers – Long Time Comin’

The Leftovers is an Indie Folk rock band out of Long Island, NY.  The band consists of Josh Honigman (vocals/guitar), Steve Roscigno (drums), Keith Jabinsky (guitar), Nick Kodis (bass) and the newly added Maggie Buckley (sax).   The Leftovers was originally started by Josh Honigman and Steve Roscigno when they were in the sixth grade!  They began as a Punk band, “full on teen angst and rebelliousness”.  Since then, the band has perfected their sound throughout the years by “taking inspiration from a wide variety of music”.  The Leftovers recently released their first studio album, “Long Time Comin’” and it is a seven song banger!

Long Time Comin’” starts off with Summer Heat.  I loved this song so much because I got a Stone Temple Pilots vibe right away.  The vocals of Josh Honigman remind me so much of Scott Weiland.  His voice echoes over the beautifully written instrumentals perfectly.  The song has that perfect 90’s alternative vibe that people fell in love with over two decades ago and are still obsessed with now!  The album continues with Only so Much, my favorite song on the album.  The song starts off peacefully with a calm guitar riff that leads into Honigman’s amazing vocals; “you can only try so hard for so long, only so many times you can get it wrong.  Only so much you can give until it’s gone, only care so much till it’s time to move on.”

The Leftovers continue on with Can’t Promise You and Breathe Under Water, two of the slower, softer songs on the album.  I’m not usually one to gravitate towards the slower, softer songs of an album, but The Leftovers have got me hooked.  The quality of their music is pristine.  The instrumentals on each song fit perfectly on this album.  Each time Honigman sings lightly, the instrumentals match his voice.  If he raises his voice, the volume and style of the instrumentals raise up with him.  This is a band that works extremely well together.  It is obvious that they are not just a few people thrown together through common interest, they are a family!

Long Time Comin’” picks the pace back up with Fake a Feeling, another favorite of mine.  The way that The Leftovers were able to integrate their traditional Indie Rock style with a reggae flow is so sick.  The song starts off with a slow guitar introduction behind Honigman’s vocals and leads into the full band rocking out.  The style of the guitar riffs with the sick bass kick and dope drumming throws a little reggae vibe into it and I love it!  I get a big Pepper/The Expendables vibe when I listen to Fake a Feeling.  On top of that, the mini guitar solo’s on this song are incredible!

Long Time Comin’” comes to an end with the final two songs; Long Time Comin’ and Meet You There.  I really like the album titled song because it has a different flow from the rest of the album.  This song has a much more blues/funk vibe to it that makes me want to dance and go nuts.  The vocals and instrumentals are a little more edgy and aggressive which adds tremendously to the darker feel of the song!  This is the song that is going to have every person in the crowd moving to the music.  Meet You There is the final song on the album, and possibly the most unique song.  The majority of the song consists of peaceful guitar chords and light, calm singing.  What I love about this song the most is the unexpected turn it takes at the end.  The song goes from peaceful and soothing to an all out jam fest!  It gets me so pumped up that I can’t help but move to the beat of the song.

The Leftovers are another Long Island band that deserves everyone’s attention.  Their debut album is awesome and should be played on all Indie Rock platforms!  Considering how great this album is, I can only imagine what The Leftovers have in store for us in the future.  Make sure to follow their social media pages and check out music from the new album on the blog’s Spotify playlist: After Hours Review!
