Blinding Eye Dog – “R’lyeh Wasn’t Built in a Decade, Hon!”
Blinding Eye Dog is a Baltimore-based Punk band. The band consists of Ron “Elvisopholes” Clark (vocals), Sean “Rev. Von Horrosin” Harrison (drums) and Nick the Lumbersexual (guitar). First off, these names are amazing. I love a band that can throw humor and fun into it! On their Facebook, they label themselves as “Baltimore’s Drunkest Superheroes”. Blinding Eye Dog has been around for the better part of ten years, drawing influences from not only Punk bands, but metal and other genres as well. They released their new album, “R’lyeh Wasn’t Built in a Decade, Hon!” in July. This album will be a favorite to any classic Punk fan.
Blinding Eye Dog did an amazing job of paying homage to the Punk roots that started it all. I immediately got a huge 90’s Punk vibe when I first heard the album. A lot of bands seemed to have lost touch with the roots that started it all; thankfully Blinding Eye Dog gave respect where it was due! “R’lyeh Wasn’t Built in a Decade, Hon!” is a whirlwind of sounds that draw from so many influences. On one song, you may hear something that reminds you of a band like Goldfinger and then the next will throw you into a heavier metal-like sound. Blinding Eye Dog’s ability to easily transition styles of songs is outstanding.
“R’lyeh Wasn’t Built in a Decade. Hon!” is a sixteen track album that will make you want to scream every lyric when you’re listening to it. When I listen to the album, I picture myself in a small venue with fans up at the stage singing their hearts out with the band, people crowd surfing nonstop and mosh pits like wild. The true definition of what a Punk show looks like! The album is filled with sick songs, but I’m going to focus on a few that really stand out to me; Puppet Massacre, Bong of Cthulhu, Berzerker and Honey, It’s Okay. Puppet Massacre is one of my favorite songs on the album. I love the fast guitar chords and upbeat drumming. This is a song that is going to have crowds going nuts. In addition to the instrumentals, the simple chorus is one that every fan will be screaming back at the band; “Puppet, Puppet Massacre! Puppet, Puppet Massacre!”
Bong of Cthulhu is another banger on this album. The instrumentals on this song are extremely catchy. I get a strong metal vibe. Even though the song isn’t overly “heavy”, it will still get you head-banging immediately! The beginning of the song has a slower tempo but it speeds up intermittently throughout. I love the way Blinding Eye Dog is able to cater to any fan. This song along will appeal to Punk, Metal, and Alternative fans! Berzerker is another jam on this album. I love the fast paced instrumentals and classic Punk vocals. It reminds me of a mix between Black Flag and CKY. Honey, It’s Okay is another sick song on this album. Blinding Eye Dog does a great job of slowing down the pace and tempo of the music on this one. I love the way that they incorporate the horns; something that is pretty unique and unexpected when you listen to the style of the album!
Blinding Eye Dog is a band that likes to have fun. From the names they gave themselves, the way they describe their band, to the animated and wild stage presence they have (I haven’t seen them live myself but have heard nothing but amazing things), Blinding Eye Dog knows how to capture the attention of anyone watching or listening! Make sure you give “R’lyeh Wasn’t Built in a Decade. Hon!” and listen and be sure to check them out live! From what I’ve heard, you won’t be disappointed when you attend one of their shows!
