Heavensake – “Post-Chroma”
Heavensake is a Post-Hardcore band from the Philadelphia area. The band consists of Mikey Lince (vocals), Pat Wood (guitar), Sean Bourke (guitar), Anthony Massimini (drums) and Skeeter Seifert (bass). Heavensake compares themselves to “Knuckle Puck meets Armor For Sleep”, with the 2000’s Emo scene being a huge influence on them. This is clearly evident on the band’s new EP, “Post-Chroma”. This new release is a five track album that is sure to turn some heads!
Heavensake has changed their sound a few times, with 3 EP’s now under their belt. In my opinion (and I’m sure others as well), “Post-Chroma” is the project where the band perfected their sound. When I spoke with the band, they had this to share on the new EP. “In 2018 we stepped into The Lumberyard Recording to record our new EP “Post-Chroma” with Ace Enders (The Early November) and Nik Bruzzese (Man Overboard). We were stoked to work with them considering we grew up in the area when both bands were blowing up. We believe that the songs on “Post-Chroma” is the defining sound of Heavensake.” They stated that “Post-Chroma is a collection of songs focused on self reflection and evaluation. Whether you struggle with value, insecurities, personal demons, hurts, or depression/anxiety in general — we want you to know that you are not worthless, you are not alone.”
I have to start by saying it’s difficult to pick a favorite song on this EP. Each song is filled with raw, emotion-filled vocals and powerful instrumentals that truly resonate with the listener. “Post-Chroma” starts off with Aftercolour. This song immediately gives off a Saosin vibe and I love it. The song immediately begins with heavy drumming and dark guitar chords that hit the listener! Mikey Lince’s vocals quickly follow and sound amazing. Heavensake demonstrates their Emo inspiration on this song! Fans won’t be able to resist singing along with Lince’s sick vocals; “I’ve got a bad reputation, with losing my patience. Always excusing myself, you know that I just caught a glimpse of my true colors and I can’t unsee them now!”
Heavensake continues the EP with Bleach and L’appel Du Vide. Bleach is filled with emotional lyrics that fans will connect with. “Been here for hours, alone at the bar. No one to question where I’ll be after dark. I never said I wanted to get up this morning, if it were up to me I wouldn’t get out of bed…” Everyone has had pretty awful times in their lives where you’ve felt exactly like this. You sit there thinking “what’s the use of getting out of bed today?” I love that Heavensake incorporated this topic in their music as it will hit home for so many people. This is the perfect way to show people going through difficult times that they are not alone! In addition to the vocals, the instrumental bridge between the choruses and verses is killer! Once I get to see them live, I know I’ll be going nuts to this one in the crowd! L’appel Du Vide follows up and changes the tone. Heavensake incorporates softer vocals and more upbeat instrumentals that demonstrate the variety that they come with in their music. If you’re new to the Post-Hardcore/Emo/Pop-Punk scene, I’d suggest starting with this song. Once you hear it, you’ll be dying to hear the rest of the album!
Heavensake finished “Post-Chroma” with Did I Leave Everyone, or Did Everyone Leave Me? and If You’re a God, Then I’m an Atheist. Did I Leave… brings the EP back to the usual, heavier sound that the band comes with. Mikey Lince’s vocals match the instrumentals perfectly and sound just like a song from Saves the Day’s 1999 release, “Through Being Cool”. The final minute and a half of the song might be my favorite part of the entire EP. I love the “breakdown” vibes it gives off. It gets me moving and head banging every time I hear it, so I can only imagine the fun that will ensue at one of their shows! “Post-Chroma” ends with If You’re a God, Then I’m an Atheist. I love this song because it is so different from the rest of the EP. This is the song where the band really puts their talents to the test by incorporating new sounds with their classic style. The instrumentals and vocals incorporate a much softer, Pop-Punkish sound. I swear, Heavensake’s fan base is going to skyrocket with the release of this EP. It’s only a matter of time before they’re touring the entire country.
I love that Heavensake was able to show off their immense talents on each song on “Post Chroma”! This five song banger is absolutely what the Post-Hardcore/Emo/Pop-Punk scene needed. Despite 3 EP’s under their belt, this relatively new band is going to make a huge name for themselves with this release! I’m glad we’re all along for the ride.
