  • The Unlikely Candidates

The Unlikely Candidates is an indie-rock band out of Fortworth, Texas. The band originated with life-long friends Kyle Morris (vocals) and Cole Male (guitar) 10 years ago. The two began as an acoustic group until the addition of Kevin Goddard (drums), Brenton Carney (lead guitar) and Jared Hornbeek (bass). With the addition of three new band members came the beginning of a new sound and style for The Unlikely Candidates. Since signing with Atlantic Records in 2013, the band has released their debut EP, Follow My Feet, Bed of Liars EP, and the most recent release, Danger to Myself.

Each EP that The Unlikely Candidates has released has come with irresistible instrumentals and vocals. Follow My Feet, the album-titled single, starts the band’s debut EP off with a bang. The harmonious chorus will keep everyone singing along at the top of their lungs, “And the high road’s steady and steep, and the low road’s easy and deep, guess I’ll follow, follow, follow my feet, guess I’ll follow, follow, follow my feet!” Follow My Feet was followed by Bed of Liars. This follow up EP came with the release of their hit single, Your Love Could Start a War. The single has reached great success, making it’s way onto Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart.

In early 2018, The Unlikely Candidates released Danger to Myself and Danger to Myself (Deluxe). I strongly suggest purchasing the deluxe version of the album, which includes the band’s newest single, Oh My Dear Lord. Oh My Dear Lord sets the bar high as the lead song of the album, as it captures the essence of the band’s signature sound and style. Celebrate, the fourth song on the album, is another stand out song for me. I first heard the chorus of Celebrate on the Dirty Heads newest album, SWIM TEAM. I had no idea that the song would be featured on both band’s albums! I love that besides the chorus being the same, The Unlikely Candidates wrote their own verses for their album version. Kyle Morris puts his heart into the vocals of this song and it is felt immediately in the first verse. “Love the love by normal fake friends, I don’t know why I feel I need them, New York City kinda breaks my heart, I fall in love but I mostly fall.”

With the release of their hit single, Oh My Dear Lord and their new EP, Danger to Myself, The Unlikely Candidates are off to a strong start in 2018. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for the rest of the year!
