Fortunate Losers is a three piece grunge/alternative rock band out of Sudbury, Ontario. Formed in 2015, this band has made waves in the Canadian music scene and is growing more each day. Blending a mix of new age rock with 90’s grunge, the sound of Fortunate Losers is refreshing. They have been able to incorporate the nostalgic sound of 90’s grunge bands like Bush and Nirvana while still putting their own 2018 spin on it. With their debut album on the way, Fortunate Losers is on the road to greatness!
Fortunate Losers was formed by Devon Cox (vocals/guitar) and Brent Boileau (bass). In order to follow their dream, the guys knew they had to find a drummer that shared the same passion that they did. That is when they discovered Dan Moir (drums) and were “immediately sold on the raw chemistry this trio wrought forth.” Now that the band’s lineup was set, Fortunate Losers have been non-stop action. The band has been on the go since day one, doing anything and everything to make a name for themselves and solidify themselves as a staple in the music scene. Fortunate Losers has been given the opportunity to be the supporting act for international touring artists, have been on two tours themselves and have even established a “full tribute act towards 90’s grunge” all within the short time they have been a band.
Fortunate Losers is currently in the process of releasing their debut album “Cut Teeth”. The album will be available through social media on April 28th, 2018. In addition to their debut album, the band is also setting up their very first U.S./Canada Tour for the fall of 2018, in support of the new album. In early 2018, Fortunate Losers released Pocket Candy, the first single off of “Cut Teeth”. I really like this song a lot. It has the sound similar to that of Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden while keeping in tone with today’s popular rock; a perfect blend of the 90’s and today. Pocket Candy starts off with a light guitar riff that leads right into the gritty, hard rock/grunge guitar chords and heavy drumming. I love the way you can feel the energy put into this song with each kick of the bass, each strum of the guitar, and every word that Devon Cox sings. “Your indecision is saltier than me, somewhere the bells are ringing, somewhere the dogs are barking. Even when you say good night, candy coated paradise, with hearts forever locked inside, our nations can wait, all nations can wait.” If you are a fan of the 90’s grunge scene and/or today’s rock, Pocket Candy is a song that will earn a permanent spot on your playlists!
In addition to Pocket Candy, Fortunate Losers released two songs in 2017; Solace State and Crown in Vein. Solace State is a song that I have had on repeat for days. I’m addicted to the slow, mellow sound of the verses that show off the band’s ability to add variety to their music. As much as I enjoy calmer verses, the chorus is what gets me going every time. I love the way the instrumentals and vocals go from soft and calm to powerful and exciting. Crown in Vein, my personal favorite song at the moment, is another headbanger. I can’t get enough of the nostalgic 90’s vibes present on this one. I can just picture Fortunate Losers performing the song at a festival and having the whole crowd rocking along with them, especially during the breakdown towards the end of the song!
With only three songs released at the moment, Fortunate Losers has done an excellent job of making a name for themselves. Pocket Candy has received “amazing support from the Rogers music station across Ontario.” They have a promising list of upcoming shows, and are expecting to release their first music video by mid summer, 2018. I expect nothing but great things from Fortunate Losers, and cannot wait to hear “Cut Teeth” in its entirety! Make sure to check out music by the band on the blog’s Spotify Playlist, After Hours Review, and keep up to date with the blog’s social media for announcements regarding the upcoming album!
