BOXER is an Indie/Pop Rock band out of East Rockaway, NY. The band consists of Lenny Sadowsky (vocals/rhythm guitar), Andrew Friedman (lead guitar), Dave Wolfsohn (bass guitar), and Johnny Pots (drums). BOXER recently formed and came to be by chance while all at an open mic night at The Cup in Wantagh, NY. The name BOXER is to honor a close friend who the band lost; Gail Boxer. BOXER recently released their first single, Stay Up. It is a song that encompasses the classic Indie style that the band represents.
I spoke to Lenny about their single and he shared his perspective on Stay Up. “Stay Up is a self acceptance, coming of age song that was written shortly after I graduated college. I was coming to terms with myself that I really wanted to at least ‘try’ to pursue music, but I also knew it would be a hard task to do, and knew it wouldn’t be accepted as being ‘practical’. So I initially said, ‘The song is essentially about coming to terms with who you want to be as a person, and the journey of becoming that person in today’s society. Acceptance of the good, the bad, and the ugly.’ But it’s also about the pursuit of being successful in our passions, art, whatever it may be and we have to believe in and support each other”.
Stay Up is a beautifully written song. The instrumentals and vocals on this track are melodic. I love the way the guitar chords and smooth drumming match Lenny Sadowsky’s voice perfectly. Stay Up starts off with the quiet strum of a guitar that leads into the graceful drumming of Johnny Pots. I really enjoy the break on this track. I love the way the instrumentals become a little rougher and harder and easily transition back into the calm and tranquility of the song. The lyrics that BOXER wrote for this song compliment Lenny’s views on the song so well. “Stay up before the pain comes back again, stay up and go play again. Get the sound out that’s stuck in your head. Stay up and go play that song again, better stay up and go play again; get the sound out that’s stuck in your head. Better stay up and go live a little, play a little, try a little, go find yourself in myself.” I love this message. The way the world is today, it is so easy to find yourself discouraged and beaten down to the point where you think, “why am I even bothering”. BOXER did an amazing job of putting together a positive song with an upbeat tempo and powerful lyrics that will surely resonate with fans.
BOXER is another example of why the Long Island music scene is alive and well! With an amazing debut single under their belt, this band has the capability of building a following and making a successful name for themselves.
