  • Dot Dash – “Unfair Weather”

Dot Dash is a three piece band out of Washington D.C.  The band consists of Terry Banks (vocals/guitar), Hunter Bennett (bass) and Danny Ingram (drums).  They label themselves under the genre of “avant garde”.  For anyone unfamiliar with that term, it represents a new and unusual or experimental ideas, especially in the arts, or the people introducing them.  I love that the band chose to represent themselves in this way.  It automatically made me want to hear more and more of their music.  In a world filled with a ton of bands all playing the same type of music, it’s always refreshing to hear something new and outside the box!

Dot Dash released their new twelve track album, “Proto Retro”, last month.  This record has received a bunch of positive attention and reviews!  The Washington Post wrote “we’re more interested in the music, a retro cocktail that recalls the yearning indie-pop of Sarah Records; ‘80s neo-Byrds jangle of R.E.M., Orange Juice and other seminal college radio artists, and the tight, throbbing bass line and slashing guitars that evoke Jam and the Clash”.  What an amazing review to get from such a well respected news source!

On September 7th, Dot Dash released a music video for Unfair Weather, the lead-off track from the new album.  This concept for this video is awesome.  The video is a mix between people walking the city streets in the rain and the band performing the song live.  It is so cool how the video continues to transition between the two, with the action of the city streets faded in the background of the band performing on stage.  What is so great about this music video is how simple it is!  Typically, you see a music video with so much production and special effects that it makes you wonder how much the band spent towards making it.  Instead of going overboard, Dot Dash took a simple concept and that highlighted the band’s music, as well as each individual band member.  All three members are seen performing on stage, and the video focuses on each one individually at certain points.  I give Dot Dash all the credit in the world for their creativity with this one.  They put out a music video that represents the band and their music perfectly!

In addition to this awesome music video, Dot Dash’s new album is great from start to finish.  Make sure you follow the band’s social media and check out some of their new music on the blog’s Spotify playlist: After Hours Review!
