On July 5th, scatterbrained. released “Black Smoke” to the masses, and it immediately blew me away the second I heard it. I’ve heard these guys live multiple times, and this track is something completely different to what I’m used to hearing from them and the masses definitely won’t be prepared when they hear it for the first time. The fact that this song hasn’t even been played live yet, who knows what other crazy surprises they have in store?!
scatterbrained. is comprised of Nicholas “Clutch” Colecchia on percussion and spoken word and Andrew Nicolae on vocals and guitar. While originally starting as a project in 2015 under the name A.N.A., after a brief hiatus Clutch joined on percussion in 2016 and the duo have been gaining more and more traction ever since. I personally fell in love with their catchy, wholesome tones accompanied by hard-hitting, soul-wrenching lyrics, but “Black Smoke” is bold, intense, and an insanely awesome surprise for scatterbrained. fans. It’s punchy, it’s hardcore, and makes you want to listen to it over and over again. Clutch’s introduction in the song is aggressive and emotional and it sends chills down my arms every time I hear it. The rest of the song progresses in a frenzy of heart-aching vocals and nu-metal elements that immediately reminded me of Linkin Park’s “Hybrid Theory” and Taking Back Sunday’s “Louder Now” era.
What I also love about “Black Smoke” is that it’s so different to what they’ve previously released and played. It’s almost as if the track harbors a new era for scatterbrained.: like a literal black smoke that is set to take over the Long Island music scene and onwards.
If you haven’t heard of scatterbrained. yet, “Black Smoke” is a perfect introduction to their style and sound: a unique mix of emotional poetry and riffs that take you back to your angsty years. Clutch and Andrew have such a fantastic chemistry that is clearly seen when they play and in the music they produce.
