Hiding from Humans – “Radio EP”
Hiding from Humans is a Pop Punk band out of Regina, Canada. The band consists of Danny Owens (guitar/lead vocals), Curtis Vanthuyne (guitar/vocals), Paul Robichaud (drums) and Chris Anderson (bass guitar). Back in November, Hiding from Humans released their debut project, “Radio EP”. This six track EP is filled with catchy vocals and irresistible instrumentals!
“Radio EP” is one of my favorite releases of 2020. These four guys used their time during the pandemic well, writing and recording a phenomenal EP. Hiding from Humans dive deep into the whirlwind of emotions that most of us have, or are still currently dealing with. Whether the song focuses on transitioning from your youthful partying days to a full-time career, or the trials and tribulations of young love, Hiding from Humans comes with an upbeat, happy structure that will keep you dancing and singing! Who would have known song that talk about such serious and sensitive topics could be so fun?
“Radio EP” starts off with the title track, “Radio”. This was the perfect track to start off the project. It shows the listener exactly what to expect from Hiding from Humans; catchy Pop-Punk tracks with some of the most relatable lyrics I’ve heard on an album in a while. Seriously, so many bands cover the same exact topics that HFH did on this EP, but HFH just did it so much better. Every single word that Danny sings is SPOT ON! “There’s some things you gotta think about sometimes. Like what to do with the rest of your life. Try to change the world overnight, you’re gonna fail and that’s alright. Is there anything that you’re after? Other than to try and get plastered. At the bottom of a corporate ladder. Ain’t it fun being 29?”
Hiding from Humans continues on with “Lost Cause”. “Lost Cause” has the classic Pop Punk sound that you know and love. One verse stood out to me above all on this one. “All my friends they think I’m psycho with no wonder why, it might have something to do with all the times I’ve lied. About my good intentions, and the plans I’ve contrived. If I had to pick sides, I sure wouldn’t pick mine.” There have been so many times where I’ve felt like I would’t pick my own side, and I’m sure there are countless others out there that can relate to this.
“Whinge” and “Distance” follow up, introducing us to a little bit of a harder hitting side of Hiding from Humans. The guitar chords that intro “Whinge” remind me of a New Found Glory style track; exactly what I love to hear! If you have ever been in a failing relationship (who hasn’t?) you’ll find yourself singing along to the chorus every time this song plays. “You’re bitching and moaning and so damn controlling. Maybe it’s time now that you tone it down. I still remember when you said ‘forever’, I guess forever means nothing to you now.” “Distance” picks up exactly where “Whinge” leaves off. “You said everything’s alright, so why is it so bad? Why is it so bad? And you seemed to happy last night, so what are you so mad? Why are you so mad?”
Hiding from Humans finishes the EP with “Glum” and “Drive”. “Glum” is my favorite track on this EP. The second the guitar kicks in, it gives off a Four Year Strong vibe that immediately made me want to start swinging my ams and kicking my feet. The instrumentals are met perfectly with Danny’s vocals. “Wake up at 6 AM, when the party used to end, to start your day of labor. Old wins turn into loss, working for a shitty boss. Is this the life we savor?” I love this line because it is the exact realization that most of us eventually have. We’re no longer living in our early 20’s where we can basically do what we want and still live a normal life. It’s time to grow up and move on. I LOVE the way Hiding from Humans end “Glum”. “The best times are standing by, sitting idly…wondering why… we don’t let them pass us by. So no sense in feeling shame, and I guess you should do the same, so please don’t look so fucking glum.”
Hiding from Humans deserves all the applause in the world. For their debut EP, these guys knocked it out of the park. If you’re looking for a band that is up next in the Pop-Punk world, look no further!
