Looking for some amazing new music? Look no further than Long Island’s own, A Place to Hide. This trio has been on our radar for a while now. We knew big things were coming their way when they dropped their 2019 project, “Wavelength”. That album demonstrated the raw talent and emotion that these guys bring to their music. It was only a matter of time before they dropped a track that blew that amazing project out of the water, and that time is now! A Place to Hide is back with their most powerful single to date, “So Wrong”!
“So Wrong” instantly landed on my list of top five releases of 2021. This is the song where A Place to Hide have truly honed in on their craft and perfected their sound. “So Wrong” is irresistible from start to finish. APTH did an amazing job blending the classic Emo/Alt rock sound with instrumentals that give it a Post-Hardcore twist. The fast paced drumming from Ryan Mastrelli and heavy guitar riffs from Nick Rigali compliment vocalist Nick Valero perfectly. You won’t be able to resist dancing around and singing along to every word. One of my favorite aspects of “So Wrong” is the band’s ability to switch up the rhythm and tempo so effortlessly. One second you want to start throwing down in a mosh pit, the next you want to sing along at the top of your lungs and before you know it you’re back to head-banging. Not once will you stop. This song is THAT good!
I got the chance to hear about the backstory of “So Wrong” from drummer Ryan Mastrelli. “So Wrong originated from a riff that Singer/Bass player Nick Valero created a few years ago. This wound up becoming the intro of the track. With this, him and guitar player Nick Rigali got together and brought the song to life as they wrote and recorded the demo simultaneously in Rigali’s bedroom. They sat on the demo for about a year before bringing it to the rehearsal space. Here, drummer Ryan Mastrelli was finally able to bring fire to the previously sad programmed drums that were on the demo. So Wrong lyrically sheds light on the frustrations, disappointments, and overall struggles we experience when we set our expectations too high in interpersonal relationships; whether that be romantic relationships, friendships, or business relationships. Specifically, So Wrong is about these experiences within A Place To Hide, as the members struggle to push through obstacles constantly testing their commitment to the band.” This quote from Ryan really stuck with me. So often do we hear about the inspiration behind a song and how it relates to the band/artist’s lives. What stuck out to me is that prior to speaking on what it meant for APTH, Ryan mentioned what the song sheds light on, giving the listener (or reader in this case) a chance to connect to the song through their own emotions/experiences prior to learning about the band’s motivation for the track. Hats off to you, Ryan!
In terms of lyrical content, “So Wrong” absolutely touches on the topics of personal frustrations, disappointments and overall struggles that we too often experience. Nick Rigali sings “I break my spine to dodge the signs. Was it all for nothing, was it all a lie? And if I’m so wrong, why do I stand right? Held by what you hide.” This verse gives off such a strong visual representation of what it is like to feel the emotions mentioned above. You push yourself, or “break your spine”, to hide the fact that something is wrong, yet you continue to stand strong with your head up high. Most of know what it’s like to be in a situation like that, and A Place to Hide put the thoughts to lyrics perfectly!
A Place to Hide is bound for greatness and it’s only a matter before they venture off to much bigger and better things within the music industry. If you weren’t a believer before, “So Wrong” undoubtably proved it.
