Delica C – Self-Titled Album
Look out, Long Island: Julianna “Delica C” Ryan has come for your earholes with her self-titled EP, out now on all places where you listen to music! This release is a complicated yet expertely coordinated collaboration between honey-toned vocalist Julianna Ryan and musical mad scientist Kenny Truhn, who have previously graced the music world with incredible releases such as “Sister” and “The Legends of Kenneth Wood” respectively. Close friends and talented artists, Julianna and Kenny got together on this release with Kenny’s idea for a “soundscape of dark/electronic/hip hop/glitch vibe” and Julianna’s desire to release this fiery, sensual personality and musical styling. “I decided to untether this persona because for many years I’ve written and released extremely personal and intimate and angry and humorous music as myself, and it had become painful to constantly dip my bucket into a well of trauma for song material.” Julianna wrote to me, “Delica C. has given me the chance to experience the chiller, cooler parts of myself– to not take myself so seriously– and to become a pool of molten lava.” If you’re looking for a set of songs that can only be best described as haunting, yet empowering and goose-bump-inducing in every best way possible, turn on “Delica C” as we dive into each of the tracks below!
In my opinion, the first track of any release is the most important especially with a new project like this, and Delica C really knocked it out of the park with “PhD”. I knew that I was hooked, lined, and sunk into the world of Delica C when I first heard the spooky electronic instrumentals and Delica C’s haunting yet beautiful vocals of this track. “The lyrics were inspired by my years attending and working in colleges/universities.” Julianna “Delica C.” wrote to me, “And while Julianna loves academia, Delica C. was inside her paying attention all along. The song is slightly humorous, but we realize it’s also hot as hell.” The melody and instrumentation is chilling and bone-curdling, reminiscent of the haunting nature of the twilight world in Legend of Zelda: Twilight.
Next on the EP is “The Tiger”. Much like the animal, “The Tiger” has a prowling energy about it, the vocals and fuzzy beats intertwining together like tigers do to camouflage in the wild. Delica describes this track as the duo’s “love song to the outcast. Delica envisions herself as a tiger roaming the streets, and she is fully herself, unwavering even in the post-apocalypse.”
Finishing off this three course prix-fixe is “Confess”. This track, as Delica C describes it, is the “devil emoji come to life”. The storyline of the lyrics tells of Delica C telling of the crimes and sins she’s committed but soon realizes that she’s destined to continue living this deviant life. This track immediately gave me Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde vibes, a realization that everyone has a dark, unorthodox side of us that we all need to act upon. As with the other tracks, Kenny’s ability to add to the eerie, twisted energy of the song is nothing short from amazing and goes incredibly well with the vocals like Hannibal’s Chianti-and-liver pairing.
Delica C.’s self-titled EP is spicy and unrestrained. This release just goes to show when two power-houses that are incredibly skilled in their art can make something even more dangerous and extraordinary when combined and collaborated together. Be sure to check out this release and follow them on all social medias to keep up to date with more of their fantastic projects!
